The birthstone for January is Garnet. This beautiful blood-red gemstone's name has its origins in the Latin word granatum, which passed into medieval English via French, gernat or grenat. Granatum not only referred to the stone but also to pomegranate seeds. Garnets are found all over the world in a variety of colours, from deep red, to green, vivid mandarin, and even violet blue. Spiritually, Garnets are thought to be great cleansers, purifying and balancing energy. They are also thought to clear and repel negative energy.
